Khalid Shoman concluded the Conference by expressing his appreciation to all the participants for their positive contributions, and announced that all constructive views were noted and incorporated into the Plan. He told those present that it was now their duty to implement the Plan, which had been adopted by the Board of Directors, emphasizing that the Board had already authorized him to supervise its implementation.

The Cairo Conference and all the taxing meetings for setting up the financial budgets for the Bank and establishing regional managements were an additional expression of Khalid Shoman's drive and intensive work at that particular time.

In the following months, Khalid Shoman stood firm, self-confident and determined, defending his developmental projects and demanding from those who had authorized him with their implementation to be committed to their duty and their responsibilities. Refusing half solutions and compromises where matters of principle were concerned, Khalid Shoman chose to withdraw from all his responsibilities at the Arab Bank,

"Wishing everyone success in preserving this giant Arab institution, and urging them to perform their duties in compliance with its principles and values."

On the 11th of June 2001, Khalid's health deteriorated drastically and he was admitted to the intensive care unit of his hospital in Vienna. He spent his last days there with his wife, son and daughter.

Khalid Shoman was always concerned for those around him and eager to make them happy and content. He loved life and revered his family. His passing away, only a few weeks after his withdrawal from the Bank, testifies to what he always believed in: that the Arab Bank was the foremost mission of his life.
